"In Tito's place came Angelina Jolie" - interview for Blic, Serbian paper, 2 January 2012

The first award he won as a student in Karlovy Vary for “Guernica.” In 27th won in Venice (“Do You Remember Dolly Bell?”), has twice won Cannes, taught at Columbia University, fought with all the globalists agendas, convinced that the universally can't do without individuality, the Japanese believe that the “Underground” is the best anti-war film in the last ten years, in Chile he is recognized by the film, the founder of the Kustendorf, a festival that is exclusively dedicated to young authors, a missionary … It is time to deal with Fyodor.

  • This summer you announced a Dostoevsky novel (Dear Fyodor) and then a film about Fyodor Mihailovich. How far went the process of writing? How would sound the dedication at the beginning of the novel?
    • EK : Two Americans discuss : “Moral? Does that has an actions on Wall Street? “Asks the first. “No,” replies another. “Then it does not exist.” It's anecdotal approach to things, but there is this sentence in my novel which does not intend to restore morale in the game and be in the place where it was in the last century. My novel wants to compare over time and suggests these differences and shows us where we are and reminds us of what were once moral values and what they are now, how humanity from outrage over a murdered man came into the period when people take out organs without anestetics and the most humanitarian authorities turn their head away from that fact. What happened so it does not matter whether you are Jelena Karleuša or Svetislav Basara, two hardly reconcilable genre sizes in Serbian recent history? What is it that ignores instances in which Tarkovsky was common ant in relation to the Sylvester Stallone-type bonehead or Schwarzenegger? Today, morale is in shambles because the terror of the market created religion of money. And then you say: Well, what of Christianity? Which Islam? What morality? The idea of my novel is a reference to the truth that morality has a practical interest of humanity.
  • What is the plot of the novel?
    • EK : Simple. One man, it's me, lives in Paris during the nineties and does radio commercials. Then he is offered to do “Crime and punishment”, but under very obscure conditions. He needs to kill the wife of a rich man who will turn to him to finance a film about Dostoyevsky. This is the story of the artist who was brought into position of a killer. He is getting ready to kill, takes training, but fortunately, a woman is killed by someone else, and he ends up in the war, this war, in which he saw the bottom of the bottom of humanity. At the end he returns from the war as a criminal.
  • Will the movie be a continuation of novel by other means?
    • EK : Yes. Novel is a film written.
  • There are other plans, Pancho Villa, “Forest of hanged a fox” … What is first on the agenda?
    • EK : Benicio del Toro should come to Küstendorf, and there will be Isabelle Huppert and Thierry Fremon, chief coach of Cannes. I expect to beat the story and Pancho Villa definitely taken in 2012.
  • How do you see the role of thinkers in this world full of wandering, uncertainty, chaos?
    • EK : There is the extent to which the thinker is marginalized. Because the company is developed not by virtue but by function. In the fifties and sixties we had the biggest movie names. Believe it or not, today we have more good filmmakers, but there are pushed, closed defunctionalized. There is something that I think is the Protestant recipe: I need to be successful, but good, screw that. Idea I think, therefore I exist now became: If I am not someone, somewhere, like Matija Beckovic says, I actually do not exist. This is a consequence of a terror of market which runs the world.
  • What actually runs the world?
    • EK : War and the war economy, which has a wide range of activities. In small countries, like Serbia and the rest of the Balkans, it manages very successfully to spend the global indestructible logic: Greece owes $ 350 billion and is bankrupt, America owes 700 trillions of dollars but prints more and more money, and there is something which enables that theory to work -they have powerful weapons. In countries like ours, there are groups and NGOs that promote, which is a great humiliation, just the status quo in which steam war economy revolves around the world, and we are the bad ones. Our people is much better than the others think. Self contempt which is brought to us is not only a result of our faults but also the fact that the world was guided by an idea that the virtues do not develop.
  • In which historical figures you recognize yourself the most?
    • EK : I have deployed myself in more of them (laughs). In 2014, it will be the anniversary of the First World War, or, at least, its formal beginning. The biggest challenge that awaits us is how to defend what needs to be defended - that Young Bosnia was the organization which acted on patriotic grounds. Today it is suspicious to pronounce the word patriot, and I am very old fashioned. Gavrilo Princip killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand in the occupied territory. So, he did not go to Vienna to kill someone. Now we come to the point that is most interesting, Ivo Andric. He was part of the Young Bosnia and did some time in prison because of it. Why would such a noble man, after all, the holder of the Nobel Prize, be a part of a concept which tells that the defense from the failed monarchy is a defense of national goals? I think there is a clear identification. Of course, I do not see myself shooting at someone. As, indeed, the gun and the bomb didn't suited to Gavrilo Princip. A great evil in which the whole nation was put that bomb and the gun in his hands. Well that is later used as the trigger of World War I. But that was not the reason for World War I. Still believing that Gavrilo Princip started that war is pointless and dull, as is disbelief that Germany wanted to go to the Middle East and run only one in a series of wars that were waged only for oil, not because of Serbia and its poets.
  • So, Gavrilo Princip?
    • EK : Gavrilo Princip (laughs).
  • One philosopher said: “There will always be conflict between what I know and what I mean.” Do you agree with him?
    • EK : Absolutely, because the actuall test of what you know is usually tried in practice. And what do you think and feel is the sphere of fiction and art. And now I am crucified between the two ideas. Because film, as a medium and art, is experiencing a revolutionary change. Change is not only in approach and form, the change is in the content. Hollywood is in fact a fabrication of a mythology which is for the most part, even when it is not, in the propaganda purpose. The trembled man that exists today is simply thrown out of the sphere in which what he thinks, feels, and possibly knows could design through his song, through art or through a new project that can improve the world. Most people today live under anesthesia and they do not activate their spirit that wanders through space carried by unknown chords.
  • There is no communism without hypnosis…
    • EK : I agree. The world is in very bad shape; on the other hand it produces the most sophisticated items. This is a new pharaonic period where the goal is that some twenty families rule the world, erase our identity and convince us that it is not pointless. If Angelina Jolie is really nominated for Golden Globe, then it must have been some great new esthetic. That is creating ideological and mythic images. Very similar was during Tito's regime. Then they walked around and talked that Tito is big, smart, beautiful, green-eyed, and now they are still walking under new management and praising Angelina. The time has come for Angelina Jolie to sit in the place of Frank Capra !? It's really as if in the Fellini's time in Fellini's place sat Za-Za Gabor, that lady with really big breasts. The value system is broken, broken under the weight of the constant survival of the idea that the market is a major measure of all things.
  • Sioran writes that “he would like to wake up and whip someone.” Why do you record movies?
    • EK : I make movies because it's better than robbing banks. When I shoot them I create my own picture of the world, which is immeasurable advantage over people who cannot impose their own image to others. The film brought me great satisfaction, it is pleasure when in Japan and Chile people recognize the “Underground”, but during time, by that old no one has became a prophet in his own yard I became the victim of an ideological picture of me that was created in my hometown. You know what, there can be no hammering in the head, and there were thousands of such after the “Underground”, to measure the joy and excitement that the film produced. French Minister of Culture apologized to me when I got the Legion of Honor in France for a lambstering that local intellectuals took against me.

Event of the Year by Kusturica :

  • Wikileaks. It introduced a new kind of social arena, inserting the incredible detail that we have been waiting a hundred years to be heard, the wall breaks down under important information.
  • “Andric-city” as a phenomenon.
  • “Assassination” of Dobrica Cosic. Not only because 70 percent of Serbs thought that maybe he is awarded with the Nobel Prize, but because it is destructive tradition. Dobrica Cosic is, whatever he was in life, a Serbian writer with recognizable work. Whether you like it or not. This was an assassination attempt or, the old Serbian pagan tradition. And that's the biggest problem with people who are here as the promoters of the West. They actually act in the Ottoman tradition. When something is on the road to democracy, it collapses breaks. If something bothers you, there is no need to choose the means, just kill.

    The monkey entered the tank…
    * EK :
A large fracture that occurred here and the great crimes that were there, I have nothing to do with it, just as I had nothing to do with the war except to try to avoid it. When the war began, when the “monkey entered the Tank”, there was only a matter of who has more weapons, not who is the better man. “Underground” has made - from Mar del Plata to Japan, where it was the best film in ten years - most of these feelings.
