The film is about the resistance of the people of Sarajevo under the nazi occupation. At the end of the war, the German army retires and they have important needs of fuel. Valter, mysterious and charismatic leader of the resistance manages in cutting their reserves. The Germans start to make the most incredible plans to try to eliminate him, but Valter remains uncatchable…
Zabranjeno Pušenje's first album was entitled Das ist Walter as an homage to this film.
When a German asks to a guy from Sarajevo “but who is Valter ?”, the other guy answers him : “Das Ist Walter !”, showing the whole town.
Thanks to its communist resistance theme, this film was a great popular success in Yugoslavia, but also in China ! Thus, during the NATO bombing of Belgrade, the USA stroke the ambassy of China. The actor who was playing Valter, Bata Zivoinović, went to meet the wounded Chinese in the hospital : they greatly appreciated !
